Case Study: Category 3 Sewage Backup in a Scarsdale Basement, NY
A municipal sewer surcharge during heavy rain backed Category 3 black water into this Scarsdale finished basement. Full biohazard remediation, demolition of porous materials, and complete reconstruction completed in 14 days.

The Project Story
Heavy spring rain overwhelmed the Scarsdale municipal sewer system. The result: 4 inches of Category 3 black water across this homeowner's finished basement, including the entertainment room, wet bar, and adjacent home gym.
Category 3 water means sewage — it's a biohazard. Standard wet-vac extraction is not appropriate. Our crew arrived in full PPE (Tyvek suits, full-face respirators, boot covers, double gloves), evacuated the homeowner to upstairs, and immediately shut down the HVAC to prevent aerosol spread.
Extraction was specialized: pump-out only, no walking through the water, all equipment surfaces double-bagged on exit. We then demolished every porous material the water touched: carpet, pad, drywall to 2 feet above the water line, base trim, and lower cabinetry in the wet bar. All went into sealed biohazard disposal.
EPA-registered antimicrobial treatment was applied to all remaining framing and concrete. Negative air pressure with HEPA scrubbers ran continuously for 8 days. Air quality testing on day 9 showed clearance.
Reconstruction was a dedicated 5-day phase: new drywall, insulation with vapor barrier, carpet, base trim, and finished cabinetry. The homeowner's wet bar got an upgrade in the process.

Full biohazard remediation, third-party microbial clearance, complete reconstruction. Chubb covered the entire $31,200 claim under the homeowner's water-backup endorsement. We installed a backwater valve as part of the rebuild to prevent recurrence.
